GBM Is Not Dead: Government Says Social Media Rumor Is False

Share

Lusaka, Zambia – Today, people on social media started saying that former Defence Minister Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba (GBM) had died. But the government quickly said this was not true.

GBM is still alive and getting better at Maina Soko Medical Centre. A press meeting was held there to show that he is okay. His family and supporters were happy to see that he is alive and recovering.

The Permanent Secretary for Information and Media, Thabo Kawana, said the death news was just “online gossip.” He asked Zambians to be careful about what they share on the internet. GBM’s lawyer, Charles Changano, was also there and agreed that the rumors were wrong and harmful.

Kawana said, “Mr. Mwamba is alive, stable, and getting better. He probably didn’t enjoy hearing fake news about himself.”

He also warned that false news like this can hurt families and cause panic. The government is now looking at ways to deal with people who spread lies online.

People close to GBM said he stayed calm and even joked about the whole thing, saying it’s just one of the strange things that can happen when you’re a public figure.
